5 Red Flags When Hiring a 3D Rendering Studio (And How to Vet One)

5 Red Flags When Hiring a 3D Rendering Studio (And How to Vet One)

Studio quality in architectural visualization varies enormously and price is a poor proxy for quality. Here are the five red flags to watch for, the seven questions you should always ask, and the one test that separates studios that can actually deliver from those that cannot.

Red flag 1 — No portfolio, or only generic stock-style renders

A serious studio has a portfolio. Not a single hero on the homepage, but ten to twenty projects with variety in typology, scale and style. If the only images you can find look like generic Lumion stock renders with the default people and cars, you are looking at a junior with no oversight, not a studio.

Red flag 2 — No clear process or timeline

"Around two weeks" is not a turnaround. Reputable studios will quote you specific business days for specific deliverables. They will tell you when to expect the first draft, the second draft, the final. If the studio cannot articulate a process, they do not have one.

Red flag 3 — Won't sign your NDA

Refusal to sign an NDA is disqualifying. Every architecture firm, every developer, every interior designer has unbuilt projects worth protecting. A studio that hesitates is the wrong studio.

Red flag 4 — Quotes that are wildly cheaper than the market

An exterior render for $50 in 2026 is not a bargain — it is a warning. The studio is either using junior trainees with no senior oversight, ripping textures from someone else's portfolio, or handing your project to a sub-contractor in another country. None of those produce reliable quality. Real studios with real artists and real overhead price within a band; if a quote is 3–5x below the market, walk.

Red flag 5 — No clear communication protocol

"Email us anytime" is not a protocol. Look for: a named project lead, a same-day-response WhatsApp commitment, a defined feedback cycle (e.g. "draft on day 3, your feedback by day 4, near-final by day 6"). If communication is vague before you start, it gets worse during the project.

The seven questions to ask

  1. "Show me three projects in my typology at my price tier." (If they cannot, walk.)
  2. "What is your committed turnaround for X exterior views?" (Specific business days, not "around two weeks".)
  3. "How many free revision rounds are included? What is the hourly rate beyond?" (Get it in writing.)
  4. "Will you sign our NDA?" (Yes or no — no negotiation needed.)
  5. "Who is the named project lead on my project?" (One person, contactable directly.)
  6. "What software do you use, and is it compatible with my files?" (V-Ray/Corona/Lumion/Unreal — and they should accept your file format.)
  7. "What does your retainer pricing look like for ongoing work?" (Even if you are starting with one project, knowing what scaling looks like reveals a lot.)

The one test that beats all questions

Pay for a single test render before committing to a larger project. A short brief, one view, a fixed fee. The output tells you everything: technical skill, art direction, communication discipline, turnaround reliability. We offer a discounted first project rate to new architecture firms and designers for exactly this reason — both sides need to confirm fit before scaling.

Verifying revision policy

Two free revision rounds per view is standard. If a studio offers "unlimited revisions", they are baking the cost into the base price (or planning to fight you later). If they offer "one round only", they are gambling that the first draft will pass and rushing you when it does not. Two rounds, with a clear hourly rate beyond, is the right answer.

The takeaway

Hiring a rendering studio is a recurring decision, not a one-off. Pick once, well, and you have a partner who learns your house style, accelerates over time and protects your margin. Pick badly and you lose a month chasing revisions and apologising to clients. The vetting process above costs you a couple of hours; the wrong studio costs you a project.
